What Is Full Site Editing (FSE)?

Full Site Editing (FSE) is a new feature by the WordPress Dev Team that will allow you to edit all parts of your site without the need for code. As such, you’ll be able to Join other WordPress experts as we use familiar Block Editor concepts. More so, as we demonstrate how you can now customize headers, footers, and other areas of your site like never before.

So that you can edit the elements of your theme such as the header and footer, that could not be easily customized in the past. The Site Editor can be enabled if your site has a theme that supports block templates. Unfortunately, it cannot be adjusted to a “classic theme” that is not designed to work with Full Site Editing (FSE).

For classic themes, you will be able to create new block-based templates only. You will not be able to edit existing templates. All options in the Customizer: site title, logo, menus, etc, can be edited now from within the templates. What’s more, FSE is controlled by the theme you choose and is not tied to a paid subscription.

The Key WordPress Release Notes To Know

This means if you switch to a theme that doesn’t support FSE you won’t have access to FSE editing options anymore, such as templates and template parts, but the content of your pages and blog posts will remain the same.

And then, adopt the styles of the new theme you switch to. When you change to a new theme that also supports FSE, any custom block template created is theme-dependent. Meaning, if you switch themes, your customizations from the previous theme will not transfer over. You’ll use the Template Part block to edit the different global regions of your site.

Like the header, footer, or sidebar. The template will group all these elements together and can be applied to a page, post, etc. You can use this block while creating and editing templates to manage blocks in areas repeated across the website (like your site’s header and footer.) Template parts can be reused throughout your templates—when you change blocks. Particularly, inside of a template part.

New Features Under Advanced Settings

On one side, under Advanced Settings, you can use the Title field to rename the template part. On the other side, if you have saved changes to a Template or a Template part and want to reset either back to the default style, you can use the Clear Customizations option. Likewise, if you are in the Site Editor, click the name of the template or template part.

You’ll easily see it while you’re editing. And then, click the drop-down next to the template part you want to reset, and click the Clear customizations option. Forthwith, if you are in the Templates or Template parts view, click the three dots next to the template you want to reset and select Clear customizations. The changes will automatically be saved.

Notably, you can create a new test site using FSE features. By default, all sites created this way will use an FSE-compatible theme and have the Site Editor features enabled: https://wordpress.com/start/. If you have an existing site you can export that content and import it into your test site so it’s not empty to start.

The Launch Site message now displays at the top of your site when previewing it. Perse, the visual and options available on the Themes page under Appearance is now slightly different. Whilst, blocks are updated on every template that uses that template part.
