What Are Vignette Ads? & Why Google Roll Them Out

Google posted that Vignette Ads are now supported on wider screens. Google wrote “vignette ads now support a larger range of screen sizes. For sites that have vignettes turned on, vignette ads will soon start to appear on wider screens such as the desktop.”

Through a statement, Google said experiments displaying vignette ads on wider screens have performed very well. And which is why it has fully launched it for wider screens. But, note that widescreen vignette ads won’t start serving until after November 3, 2020.

Seamlessly, Google also said that if you’ll not want to show vignettes on desktop, you can turn this option off. By using the new “Wide Screen” control in your Auto ads settings. Now that among other advertising networks, the native ad units by Google do offer lots of flexibility in terms of customization.

In general, you must have seen this notice banner or notification in your Google Adsense Account if you show ads on your approved websites using Google AdSense. After seeing this you may be wondering what are Vignette ads and what this notification is all about.

What are Vignette Ads?

According to Google, an ad unit is one or more Google Ads displayed as a result of one piece of the AdSense ad code. While keeping in mind, you can create, customize, and manage ad units on the Ads page in your AdSense account. In other words, an ad unit gives you control over where ads appear. With this in mind, Vignette Ads are full-screen ads that appear between page loads and can be skipped by users at any time. Vignettes are displayed when the user leaves a page, rather than when they arrive on one. So, the user doesn’t have to wait for them to load.

If you are already using Anchor/Vignette ads, you are automatically migrated over to Auto ads without any need to add code to your pages again. You can use the toggle buttons from within your Adsense account to try new formats.

Google comes up with the beta version of the Anchor/Overlay and Vignette ads with readers in mind. In this article, I’ll explain everything that you need to know about Vignette Ads if you didn’t like the video above.

How the Vignette Ads work

It’s important to realize, the new ad formats may or may not work for all of the AdSense publishers. Simply, because, we’ve seen it in the past.

Whereby, the custom sizes, super large vertical and horizontal banners didn’t work out for most of the publishers. And as they sound, overlay ads will appear blinding the content during the page load time. Coming back to the new overlay ads, they’ll display at the bottom of the content as always-on-top units.

Although, these can easily be dismissed by clicking on the ‘X’ button of the ad. And if the readers click on it, they will be displayed full screen with animations or videos. These ads will also appear as links ads that we see with Infolinks integration. But, these two ad types will only work on mobile screens.

On the other side, the vignette ads load in the loading time of the webpage as we see ads on YouTube videos. These ads can be easily skipped by users at any time like as of YouTube’s.

Google introducing these ads is quite sweet shocking people because overlaying the content might act against their own policies. But, Google confirms that these ads are introduced with an intention of keeping the user in mind. So, they are safe to implement on our site too in terms of Google SEO.

On a clear note, the good news is that we can easily preview these ads on our mobile device too. And that’s by adding the hashtag #googleads to the URL of the page. For instance, you can simply add the tag on the jmexclusives page URL to see ad results. From; https://josephmuciraexclusives.com/ (before the tag) to https://josephmuciraexclusives.com/#googleads (after the tag).

Basically, the new Google ad formats are cool yes. But, these ad formats could affect the user engagement rate in one way or another. Particularly, as they do for the other ad serving networks like Infolinks. And in the end, this might result in an increase of bounce rates on mobile phones.

Bering in mind, it is always better to have a minimum number of ads on the mobile version of any given website. Luckily, Google provides all the required webmaster guidelines on how to enable and implement these new ad formats on their sites.

All you need to do is just add a piece of ad code in <head> or <body> sections of the pages you want these ads to appear. After all, if you log in to your AdSense account, you’ll also see the instructions right on the screen notice board.

Be that as it may, please note that these new vignette ad formats are still in the beta phase. Meaning that; it might take some time for the Google team to regularize them. And as such, enabling them on your website will totally be experimental. So, you should do it with this point in mind.
