What Is An eBook?

When we talk of eBook Publishing, an eBook is an electronic version of a printed book that can easily be read on a computer or handheld device, with properly formatted text and images, no matter the size of the screen. The text is reflowable — meaning when one screen is full, it will flow to the next — and the images will resize to fit screen proportions.

Basically, eBooks Publication is the fastest way to self-publish your book worldwide. Making it easy for millions of readers to find, buy, and enjoy your book online on retail sites. Like Amazon’s Kindle Store, Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Store, Apple Books, and many more.

With eBooks, readers can take hundreds, even thousands of books on the go, and all on one device. In other words, an eBook is an electronic book, also known as an e-book. Hence the derivation of the eBook term from the electronic book or rather digitally presented book. So, an eBook is a book publication made available in digital form.

When Amazon created its line of Kindle e-readers, one of its advantages was Amazon’s online presence and store. Amazon leveraged this advantage by providing an always-on 3G connection called “Whispernet” to its early Kindle models. An option still available on the latest offerings in the Kindle line.

With Whispernet, users can browse the Kindle store, make purchases and view some Web content. Whispernet success has led the company to offer the technology to companies and other organizations as a system called Whispercast.

In addition to Whispernet, Amazon also provides Whispersync and Whispercast. The former is a bookmarking solution that allows books and other content to be synced between different devices automatically. Although Whispercast is similar to Whispersync, it’s corporates based.

If you search on the web today, you’ll find that there are so many guides on how to sell eBooks on Amazon Kindle, but not all of them are fruitful. That’s why in this guide, I’ll give you a breakdown of how to sell eBooks on Amazon Kindle in very simple steps. All you’ll need is to follow my leads!

Step One: Make sure your Book is in order

Before you even start to sell eBooks on Amazon Kindle, there’s something you’ll need to do. First of all, Prepare your manuscript and cover. Whereby, you can check out their tools and resources for more details on that. Secondly, make sure your book meets the Amazon content and quality guidelines.

Then again, make sure your browser is updated. You’ll now head on to your KDP Bookshelf. Where you’ll see an option to “Create a New Title” and so forth. But, don’t worry too much if your eBook is not in Kindle format, you still need to sign up.

Your eBook will be converted to Kindle at a later point, so try not to worry. Above all, it’s free to self-publish eBooks and paperbacks with Kindle Direct Publishing. And now, let’s look into the remaining steps so that you can successfully start publishing right away.

Step Two: Create an Amazon KDP Account

As I said, the first thing you need to do in order to publish your first eBook is open up a KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) account with Amazon.  You can sign up for this for free at the following link – https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/signin that’s. So, use your Amazon account to sign in to KDP or create one.

At the same time, if you already have an account with Amazon, you can use the same login details. Once you are all signed up, you will be taken to your “Bookshelf”. This will list all the books that you have available for sale on Amazon. It’ll obviously be empty right now…. but not for long!

In only a few more steps your e-book will be available for sale with Amazon – it truly is as easy as that! Most of the fields on this page are self-explanatory, but if you do become confused there are prompts to give you some direction. You want to make sure that you fill in each of the sections and provide as much detail as possible about your book.

Step Two: Enter your Book Details

In the very first section titled ‘Enter Your Book Details’, you will see an option to add an ISBN (International Standard Book Number).  Note that I said “optional”.  When I was looking to add my eBook onto Amazon, everywhere I read said you needed an ISBN number and I didn’t think I would be able to get my e-book listed.

So, I will be very clear here. You DO NOT NEED an ISBN Number to sell eBooks on Amazon Kindle! If you do not have this number, simply leave it blank. But, if you’re self-publishing your book, you’ll need to enter your own name into this field.

In this case, choose a category that is relevant for your e-book and use keywords to help customers find your book. The more targeted keywords you can use, obviously the better this will be. You’ll then need to upload a cover image of your eBook. This image will be shown on Amazon’s sale page, so it is important to spend some time on getting it right.

On the other hand, if you don’t feel you have the skills to make your own cover, you could hire someone to do it for you. There are plenty of people on Fiverr who can design covers for only $5.  If you do use Fiverr, make sure you check out the seller’s credentials first and check previous work they have undertaken.

Step Three: Upload your Book

In the first place, your work is under copyright protection the moment it’s created and fixed in a tangible form. Amazon doesn’t require a copyright page, but many authors choose to include one. If you’ll have more questions about copyright, please consult an attorney. You can see some of their copyright guidelines.

It’s important to note that the image you upload needs to be saved in a JPEG or TIFF format. And at least 1000 pixels on the longest side (height/width ratio of 1:6). To upload your book file, you’ll first need to create a title on your Bookshelf and enter book details (e.g., title, author name).

Learn More: Self Publishing | Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing

To have your eBook on Amazon it needs to be in Kindle format. Whereby, you could organize for this to be converted before uploading. Or even upload the PDF or Word file and have Amazon convert it for you. This is certainly my preference!

Amazon will take the file that you upload and convert it to a Kindle-friendly format. There is an option to view your converted file and I highly recommend you do this. Especially, if you have used pictures or graphics in your eBook. While keeping in mind, conversion can sometimes distort the formatting.

So, it’s incredibly important you check the final upload before you continue any further. This is your book and you need to be happy with the final look.

When you’re ready to upload your file:
  1. Find the book on your KDP Bookshelf and click Continue setup.
  2. Go to the “Kindle eBook content” or “Paperback content” tab.
  3. In the “Manuscript” section, click Upload eBook manuscript or Upload paperback manuscript.
  4. Find and open your file on your computer. After we finish converting your file, a confirmation appears.

If you updated your book and want to upload the new version, follow the same steps.

Step Four: Confirm your Pricing & Royalty Options

Amazon requests that you choose between two royalty options which are 35% and 70%.  This is the percentage of the book sale that is given to you, and Amazon will keep the rest. For a 70% royalty option, the e-book must be priced between $2.99 and $9.99.

If your e-book is priced above or below this amount, you will need to select the 35% option. It’s worthwhile playing around with some figures here. Simply, because you may be better off selling your book for $9.99 than $14.99 for instance, as the money in your pocket would be higher.

Once you have completed all the details for your eBook and you have saved it, Amazon will review it before they accept it for sale on their site. Usually, this can take between 24-48 hours, so just be patient! Amazon will email you once the e-book has been approved and will send you the direct link where it is for sale.

After that, all you need to do now is start sharing your new Amazon link and wait for the sales!!!

How do I create a Paperback of my published eBook?

Go to your Bookshelf, find your eBook, and click +Create Paperback. They’ll update your paperback details with the details you provided when you set up your eBook. You can still edit these details. Like for eBooks, you can set separate prices and distribution options for each supported marketplace for your paperback.

If you already published your title as an eBook, they’ll review your Paperback to make sure it meets their content and quality guidelines. And having said that, you can read and learn more about the paperback submission process. As for eBooks, an ISBN isn’t required to publish them with KDP.

After your eBook is published on KDP, Amazon assigns it a 10-digit ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number). And as for Paperbacks, KDP can provide you with a free ISBN to publish your paperback. You can as well buy your own ISBN from Bowker or through your local ISBN agency.

What if I can’t Sign in?

Sometimes multiple accounts are created if you visit Amazon and accidentally indicate that you’re a new customer when you sign in. This creates another account with the same email address and a different password. When signed in to one account, you won’t be able to see or edit in the other account.

To fix this, sign out of the current account and then sign back in again with the email and password associated with your KDP account. I recommend clearing any saved passwords from your browser before signing in again. So, did you forgot the password for your KDP account?

To reset it:
  1. Go to KDP and click Sign in.
  2. Click on Forgot your password. This opens the “Password assistance” window.
  3. Enter the email address or mobile phone number associated with your KDP account.
  4. Enter the One Time Password sent to the email address or mobile phone number associated with your account and click Continue.
  5. To protect your account against unauthorized access, you may also be required to enter your zip code or credit card expiration date.

After you’ve done so, click Continue. Enter your new password. Click Save changes and Sign-In.

How do Royalties and Payments work?
  • eBook royalties. You can choose between two royalty options for each of your eBooks: the 35% royalty option and the 70% royalty option.
  • Paperback royalties. KDP offers a fixed 60% royalty rate for paperbacks sold on Amazon marketplaces where KDP supports paperback distribution.
  • Your royalty is 60% of your list price. They subtract printing costs, which depend on page count, ink type, and the Amazon marketplace your paperback was ordered from.
  • Payments. KDP pays royalties every month, approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which they were earned.

With that in mind, you can read and learn more about getting paid.

Final Words,

It must be remembered that eBook publishing is an important subject to millions of lives. Especially now that they have easy access to eBook online reading on e-readers, tablets, and smartphones. Thus, there are millions of readers who wouldn’t ever consider downloading a book.

Coupled with podcasts, eBook publishing has seen an increase in demand for their popularity in online digital life. Although this may be true, there are still several misconceptions about eBooks worldwide. And especially, consisting of text, images, or both, which is readable on the flat-panel display of computers or other electronic devices.
