Damini Ogulu, known professionally as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian Afro-fusion singer and songwriter.
Not to mention, Burna Boy rose to prominence in 2012. Especially after releasing the lead single “Like to Party” from his debut studio album, L.I.F.E (2013).
Important to realize that; Aristokrat Records released Burna Boy’s debut studio album L.I.F.E on August 12, 2013. It serves as the follow-up to his second mixtape, Burn Identity (2011).
L.I.F.E sold 40,000 copies on the first day of its release.
Aristokrat Records later sold the album’s marketing rights to Uba Pacific for ₦10 million. The release of the album was preceded by five singles: “Like to Party”, “Tonight”, “Always Love You”, “Run My Race” and “Yawa Dey”.
Why did Burna Boy leave Aristokrat Records?
In the first place, Aristokrat Records is a record label based in Lagos, Nigeria. Whereby, it is part of the 960 Music Group.
Headed by Piriye Isokrari, the label focuses on contemporary pop in the Nigerian music space.
Notably, Aristokrat Records is in the business of;
- producing music,
- recording music,
- marketing music recorded by musicians,
- branding of the artiste,
- and handling artist’s public relations matters.
With this in mind, the label signed singer Burna Boy in 2011. Whereas, he became the label’s marquee artist after the success of ‘Like 2 Party’ (2012).
Together, label and artist saw the release of several successful singles, culminating in Burna Boy’s debut album ‘LIFE’.
However, Burna Boy left the label in 2014 after a disagreement. The label now has Pucado, Ozone, Mojeed, and head of production, Leriq.

Burna Boy launches Spaceship Entertainment
Barely 8 months after parting ways with Aristokrat Records in 2014, Burna Boy in 2015, created his own record label. For that matter, called Spaceship Entertainment.
When Burna Boy left Aristocrat records, he flirted with the name BBG, Burna Boy Goons on social media a lot and it was believed it is the name of his own label, however, the singer opted for Spaceship Entertainment.
Remarkably, he released his second album On a Spaceship on 25 November 2015. And in September 2016, he released the 7-track EP Redemption. Particularly, with the lead single “Pree Me” debuting on Noisey.
Burna Boy and Present Times
Further, he released his third studio album Outside on January 26, 2018. Notably, described as a mixtape by the singer. Equally important, Outside Music Album consists mostly of Afrobeats, dancehall, reggae and road rap.

Album and Artist of the Year Award
Additionally, the album received critical acclaim and was ranked by Pulse Nigeria and Nigerian Entertainment Today as the best Nigerian album of 2018. Furthermore, it won Album of the Year at the 2018 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
In February 2018, Outside debuted at number 3 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Not forgetting that, the album’s biggest single “Ye” ended up atop most Nigerian publications. With a year-end listing of the biggest song of 2018.
In addition, he ended up the year as Nigeria’s biggest artist of 2018. Another key important aspect is that he is currently the artist that is making waves at the moment.
After all, he started from the bottom and here he is at the top. Equally too, with so much hit songs which he made in 2018. Landing him international recognition in addition to several awards and nominations.
Burna Boy sold Out Events
Firstly, on 7 October 2018, Burna Boy performed before a sold-out crowd at London’s O2 Academy Brixton.
A day prior to the show, he held a pop-up event at Red by Little Farm and sold limited boxes of his Space Puffs cereal, as well as custom notepads, lighters, and graphic tee-shirts.
All in all, he won four awards at the Soundcity MVP Awards Festival. Including,
- African Artiste of the Year,
- Listener’s Choice
- and Best Male MVP.
Burna Boy on the YouTube’s Artists Spotlight
Finally, in April 2019, Pulse Nigeria reported that he was to release African Giant, a 16-track album. Whereby, he held a private listening session for the album and shared photos from the event on social media.
As can be seen, the Port Harcourt born Nigerian Afro-music Superstar has hustled his way all up. In reality, now that his music is available and streaming on the major main streams across the world.
