Who is Anne Waiguru?

Anne Waiguru or rather, Anne Mumbi Waiguru began her career in the Public Service. In particular, by providing Technical Assistance to the Public Service Reform Secretariat. Especially in what was then the Cabinet Office.

Since then she has variously served as the Head of Governance and the Economic Stimulus Programme at the National Treasury. Also, alternate to the Permanent Secretary and or the National Treasury in the Public Procurement Oversight Authority and Advisory Board.

Waiguru was also a key member of the Board that oversaw the Women Enterprise Fund. Furthermore, in view of her distinguished public career, she was successfully nominated two years ago as one of the Top 40 under 40 women in the country.

Not to mention, she was the only nominee at the time from the Public Service.

Where was Anne Waiguru born?

For your information, Anne Waiguru was born Anne Mumbi Waiguru in 1971. Whereby, she attended Nairobi River Primary School and later Precious Blood Girls’ Secondary School, Riruta. Eventually, she sat for her O-Level exams in 1987.

In addition to that, she then joined Moi Forces Academy in Nairobi where she sat for her A-Level exams in 1989 at Moi Forces Academy. Where she studied Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

Upon graduating from Egerton University with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and home economics.

After which, she worked for Transparency International as an intern and research assistant, and then joined the Kenya Leadership Institute. The former Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru gained one step closer to becoming the next Kirinyaga Governor.

Particularly, after trouncing the incumbent Joseph Ndathi in the Jubilee Party primaries. Waiguru had a commanding lead of over 80,000 votes with 102,927 votes against her rival Mr. Ndathi who had 19,078 votes.

As soon as she claimed the ticket, Ann Waiguru was welcomed with open hands by the people of Kirinyaga. Especially to face off with another former female minister, NARC-Kenya’s Martha Karua.

At the end of August 2016, Anne Waiguru declared her interest in politics and registered for TNA membership. This was in preparation for the 2017 general election where she was planning to vie for the Kirinyaga County gubernatorial seat.

Be that as it may, should either Waiguru or Karua emerge triumphant in the General Election, they would make history. Of course by becoming the first female governors if not among the first. Correspondingly, Anne Waiguru resigned following the National Youth Service Scandal.

In which approximately Kshs. 1.4 billion was stolen from the National Youth Service. So to say, a program under the Ministry of Devolution and Planning, Waiguru resigned from her position as Cabinet Secretary, with Festus Mwangi Kiunjuri taking her place.

What happened after the 2017 Elections?

Anne Mumbi Waiguru is the 2nd and current governor of Kirinyaga County in Kenya, in office since 22 August 2017. She was elected as governor in elections held on 8 August 2017.

Previously, she served as the first Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Devolution and Planning. Kenyans On Twitter were highly critical of Waiguru’s intent to run for public office after a highly publicized corruption plot at the National Youth Service that led to her resignation.

Despite demands for her sacking, President Uhuru Kenyatta and top government officials. Including, Deputy President William Ruto and majority leader Aden Duale stood by her. Especially dismissing the allegations as propaganda advanced by the opposition.

An attempt to introduce a motion for impeachment in the National Assembly was defeated. Through a concerted pressure from forces allied to the president. Along with Joyce Laboso and Charity Ngilu, Waiguru is one of three women who became Kenya’s first female governors in 2017.

The fight against corruption eventually mutated into the fight against Anne Waiguru. Anne Waiguru thereafter remade herself into a politician.

Firstly, through fuelling speculation that she would seek an elective office in Nairobi. And she did this even before declaring her intent to become the next Kirinyaga Governor.

Is Anne Waiguru fit for the 2022 Elections?

Surprisingly, only time will tell! But, as a matter of fact, the Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru is likely to meet her match in the upcoming 2022 general elections.

For one thing, leaders in the county are already creating campaign strategies as they prepare to battle it out for the top county seat. Not forgetting, the current Woman Representative Purity Ngirici is among those likely to contest for the coveted seat.

A section of residents in Kirinyaga is drumming up support for Ngirici. Owing to the projects she has initiated in the county through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).

Sources affirm that, according to residents in Kerugoya, Mwea, and Kirinyaga Central, Ngirici has uplifted the living standards of locals. For instance, in the county through the empowerment of women, youth, and the elderly.


In conclusion, when Anne is not busy at work,  she likes reading, traveling, and dancing. And in reality, she has become quite the role model. She inspires a sense of success in many young ladies in leadership who would love to be in her position one day.
